Qawwali song on Lord Ganesha: Watch

Lord Ganesha or Ganpati is one of the most revered Gods not just in India but also outside. Among the various names attributed to him is Vignaharta. It means someone who removes obstacles from your path. It is not surprising to see an unending list of songs dedicated to one of the most worshipped Gods. But it is indeed surprising to see a Qawwali song made on Ganesha.

Qawwali is considered Islamic in nature in our society. So one wouldn’t expect a song of this genre to be created for a Hindu God. The song in question is ‘Hey Lambodar Gajmukh’ from filmmaker, musician and singer Avadhoop Gupte’s Marathi movie Morya, which was released in 2011. It’s sung by Farid Sabri, Swapnil Babdodkar and Janhavi Arora and composed by Gupte. The two Qawwali singers in cameo appearances are played by Marathi star actor Subodh Bhave and Gupte himself.

Hey Lambodar Gajmukh’ is a sheer pleasure to the ears. The song is completely Qawwali in nature but at the same time succeeds in portraying the greatness of Lord Ganesha and his qualities. This fusion is masterful to say the least. Like almost every Qawwali song, this one also reaches a crescendo in the end, which provides a kick.

Morya stars Santosh Juvekar and Chinmay Mandlekar in lead roles. The movie is about two warring groups staying in a chawl in Mumbai. Their enmity reaches higher each year during Ganeshotsav when they organize their respective Ganesh pandals. There is a war between both the camps on whose pandal attracts maximum devotees. The two camps go to any lengths to achieve their goal; even resorting to unethical means. The film is sharp critique on such fights in the name of God and ends by giving a message on unity and brotherhood. Morya was one of the successful Marathi films of that year.
